Connected delivery boxes for increased durability and availability.

Goods transport is an important part of society and a smart transport system means that accessibility to important social functions - such as trade - is strengthened for individuals. In the existing transport system, delivery to agents is most common, but home deliveries are also seen as an important alternative.

The Smarthome project tests how new technology and new services with connected delivery boxes can streamline both deliveries to the recipient and return flows from the same box. During the project period, 150 connected delivery points will be established in the Stockholm region to investigate how the home delivery system is affected.

The boxes are so-called recipient-free home deliveries, where no personal physical receipt or signature is needed as access to the box is personal. A logistical and environmental benefit is that the carriers can make home deliveries more efficient and the recipient gets an accessible delivery system close to home. To ensure that the needs from the business customer side are included, two representatives from trade are also included in the project.

Through already established digital return services, the box can also function as a collection point for the return flow back to the merchant. The project also studies the potential of automated information sharing to enable dynamic route planning and coordination of transport with the aim of reducing resource consumption by increasing the degree of filling in the transport vehicles.

In a previously carried out research project on innovation in trade, it became clear that the competitive situation between carriers was an obstacle to sharing infrastructure, such as a parcel vending machine, when a competing carrier owns the equipment.

A prerequisite for further development in the area is to develop new business models and forms of cooperation for carriers, system developers and cities in parallel with the technological development. In order to speed up development, the project's intention is to demonstrate how connected operator-independent home delivery boxes can streamline the goods delivery system for carriers and at the same time make it available to the individual.

Two carriers with different backgrounds and service perspectives on the transport system participate in the project. The hope is to generate new knowledge towards more sustainable mobility solutions for goods and at the same time develop new forms of cooperation.
