E-com Ready

Reduced climate footprint, better working environment, more efficient working methods and cheaper deliveries. With e-commerce-adapted deliveries, e-commerce can reduce its climate impact and at the same time save large sums. For Apotea, one of the pilot companies, the cost savings amounted to 97 percent and at the same time the climate footprint was reduced by 77 percent. This project thus shows a great potential to increase the efficiency of e-commerce, reduce the total use of resources and contribute to a more sustainable trade.

Brief about the project

The suppliers to the trade are today prepared to deliver to the warehouses and stores of the physical trade. This means that the transport packaging of the products follows the logic of physical trade, where goods come in small retail packaging such as with plastic trays or other packaging components that are suitable for a store shelf. When these end up in an e-commerce warehouse, it becomes inefficient with a large amount of leftover packaging material as a result. The hypothesis is that e-commerce can become both more efficient and sustainable with deliveries that are "E-com Ready". Among other things, the project has carried out "before and after" tests at Apotea and Blomsterlandet's warehouse. The project has also spread the knowledge that is available, among other things from the project group's companies, which include DS Smith, Amazon, Apotea and Blomsterlandet. The project's final report is due in November 2023.

Results

Two of the country's largest e-retailers, Apotea and Blomsterlandet, have, within the framework of the project, implemented changes to the product's transport packaging to better adapt them for delivery to their e-commerce warehouses.

- When we receive deliveries of goods to our warehouse in, for example, a 300-pack, instead of the most common size, a 2-6-pack, we save a lot of packaging, which is fantastic for efficiency and the climate, says Erika Svensson, Sustainability Manager Apotea and initiators and pilot companies in the project.

The result is cost savings of up to 97 percent and a reduced climate footprint of up to 77 percent.

- The results are fantastic. With efficient e-commerce-adapted packaging, savings can be made for both the wallet and the climate, while improving the working environment, says Andreas Karlsson, purchasing manager at Blomsterlandet and pilot company in the project.

The e-com ready report also presents the e-com ready Guidelines, which in a seven-point program help e-commerce companies and suppliers adapt the deliveries to an e-commerce warehouse.

The project has also resulted in a definition of e-com ready and the tool "E-com ready footprint" which enables more e-retailers to create e-com ready packaging.

Hållbar E-handel has run this project together with a working group consisting of the e-commerce players above. This working group has been led by Mårten Sjölin, logistics expert at Sjölin&Löfgren marten.sjolin@sjolo.se and Jonas Arnberg jonas@hållbarehandel.com
